Mark and Karen House know a thing or two about building with Yankee Barn Homes. Cottage at the Barn is their second build, with a third concept already in the works. Located in Virginia, Mark and Karen’s projects comprise a vacation compound built close to the University of Virginia.
A Vacation Cottage Takes Shape
Cottage at the Barn is a vacation build that could easily become a small primary home. At 1,176 square feet, the two bedroom, two bathroom cottage is a single level dwelling with vaulted living space. The combined kitchen, dining and living room area is located to the front under a timbered ceiling while the remainder of the square footage is bedrooms, baths, closets, and a combination laundry/mud room. A front porch runs the width of the house, providing yet another living space during warmer weather.
Cottage at the Barn is the sister to Split Rock Bunk House. If Cottage seems a bit large for you, take a look at it. Split Rock is Mark and Karen’s first YBH design as well as the inspiration for Cottage at the Barn. While you’re at it, read Karen and Mark’s interview with Post and Beam Living. If you’re considering a build with us, Mark and Karen would be happy to chat and give you the perspective of experienced YBH homeowners.
We are hoping to be able to professionally photograph both Split Rock and Cottage at the Barn. However, Mark and Karen have provided us with some great update photos in the meantime. We love what they’ve done with the place!
