Finding a general contractor for a panelized post and beam home might seem daunting. Yet, the Yankee Barn Homes shell package is constructed in such a way, general contractors not previously familiar with our shell tell us they love our product. (Read Hazley Builders Interview)
Some perspective clients are wary when learning YBH builds the shell and a contractor finishes the home. However, building a YBH structure is actually less complicated, less wasteful, and faster than building a stick-built home.
Finding a general contractor is similar to finding an electrician, a plumber, or a maintenance repair-person. Word of mouth is always best. Most of us feel more confident hiring a professional when people we trust recommend them.
Another avenue to explore when finding a general contractor is your local lumberyard. Ask for recommendations. Many lumberyards keep a list of contractors in their area.
Search out local construction sites and speak with the homeowners. Ask for their contractor’s name and seek their thoughts on the quality of his/her work. Research other builds the contractor has done in the area.
Questions to ask a perspective general contractor:
- Ask to see recent work
- Request a price range (pricing is estimated by square foot)
- Ask for references
- Ask about prior prefabricated build experience.*
*This is not a big issue when building with Yankee Barn Homes because a YBH Supervisor is included in the price of our package. The supervisor oversees and assists in the raising of your shell.
As with any hire, you want to know you are choosing the professional best suited to your project. Yankee Barn Homes understand this. During the design process, Yankee Barn Homes will evaluate your needs and work with you to identify what you are looking for in a general contractor. With that knowledge and your finished design, we will introduce you to the best builders suitable AND available for your Yankee Barn home. We have years of experience with quality builders in most parts of the country. Yankee Barn Homes also has labor crews available who are willing to travel to help raise the shell; these crews would be responsible for erecting the Yankee Barn Home Shell Package components on your prepared site. Some customers choose this option, and then hire local tradesmen to finish the job. Our crews have completed shell assemblies coast to coast.
