In post and beam homes, the industrial look may be used in wide array to great effect. From total immersion in the style, i.e. mimicking a city loft, to the more subtle use of elements of the look through lighting, accent pieces and/or fixtures, the industrial look fits seamlessly with a post and beam house. A perfect example may be found in the Feb. 2013 issues of House Beautiful’s Kitchen of the Month. The “bones” of the kitchen are created with an open, lofted space using rough exposed beams in the ceiling then filled out with all sorts of industrial style fixtures and pieces.
Post and Beam: Yankee Barn and The Industrial Look
There have been many Yankee Barn homeowners who’ve used the Industrial Look for their interior design in varying degrees over the past few years with great success. Take a look at the following photos to see if you don’t agree.
- In this East Hampton kitchen, the pendant lights and counter stools are reproductions of the industrial period.
- In this CT Yankee Barn, the black honed slate on the fireplace, and the stream-lined design of the fireplace itself, are both a nod to the factory furnace found in many a late 19th Century industrial building.
- This Yankee Barn cottage used the industrial look to great effect in the kitchen/dining area through the use of the table (notice the legs), the chairs and the large pendant light, all set against the bleached timbers of the exposed post and beam frame.
- The lighting in this coastal cottage kitchen is definitely industrial in style.
- The pendant light and the stools at the kitchen island are just a smattering of the industrial look in an otherwise contemporary farmhouse style kitchen.
So glad to see you are back! I didn’t know you were going to stay in business! We own a YB in Eastman, which we keep rented through Carol Shepherd. Starting this summer, we will not rent it and will be living in it for vacations. We are going to start doing renovations and updates this summer as well. Yb designed two additions for it, but for starters we will need to make a more functional entryway and take care of “deferred maintenance”, as Carol calls it!
