By its very nature, a barn home is beautiful. However, without the proper functional lighting for everyday living, and secondary lighting to create a warm inviting atmosphere, the barn home will not look its best. Effective lighting is important as it makes your home, and everyone in it, look better.
Layered lighting works well in any home, but particularly in a barn home where showing of the post and beam frame is important. Best achieved by using more than one light source and a mixture of lighting types, layered lighting creates pools of flattering light for an even illumination. Always use many sources of light in a room so the space will glow and have a consistent level of warmth.
Overhead or ceiling lights come in many styles; flush-mounted lights, suspended lights, chandeliers, and recessed lights. Wall lights include sconces and swing-arm lights.Lamps come in many different sizes and styles, including tabletop and standing. Place lamps strategically around a room to add to the pools of light. Finally, specialty lighting such as picture lights, bookcase or cabinet lights, and hidden fixtures that wash a wall in light, round out the layered look.
Though not discussed in this article, exterior lighting is also important. Stay tuned, as we’ll be covering this topic in the near future.
