Annandale: A Contemporary Barn Home Featured in Boston Design Guide
Perched above the rolling hills of New York’s Hudson Valley, Annandale is a home that makes a statement without ever raising its voice. Designed by Auver Architects and built by Yankee Barn Homes, it is among the largest residences in our portfolio, defined by clean lines, structural innovation, and a thoughtful connection to its surroundings.
This striking barn-style contemporary recently earned a feature in Boston Design Guide, which praised its balance of modern vision and timeless craftsmanship.
The recognition is a reflection of what makes Annandale special: a home that appears simple in form yet reveals layers of engineering mastery and design precision.
A Home of Elegant Simplicity
Annandale’s layout is built from three distinct volumes: the main living space, a separate primary suite, and a garage wing. This clarity of design creates harmony, while the details bring warmth and character.
The main residence centers on a vaulted great room with ceilings that soar two stories high. An open-concept kitchen and dining area extend from the space, anchored by a fireplace that houses a custom pizza oven. Expansive glass doors along the western wall fold open to blur the boundary between indoors and out, inviting panoramic views of the valley.
The primary suite sits apart, connected by a glass foyer that provides both separation and flow. With a private sitting area, spacious bedroom, and dual walk-in closets leading to the bath, it offers a retreat-like atmosphere. Completing the trio, the garage wing provides function while maintaining the home’s cohesive form.
“Bold in its modernism, yet deeply grounded in traditional materials and precise panelized building practices.”

Every element is designed with restraint, from the clean-lined staircase to the subtle yet commanding window walls, creating a home that feels both refined and inviting.
Behind the Design: Precision and Craft
While Annandale presents as minimal and composed, its construction was anything but straightforward. The project required inventive structural solutions and exacting attention to detail.
“At first, it looked like a simple box. But once we dove in, the windows, custom doors, and structural engineering really made it a fun project.” — Chris Sevigny, Yankee Barn Homes
Oversized bifold doors demanded absolute precision with virtually no room for structural deflection. To maintain the wide-open layout, steel supports were strategically concealed within the floor system, allowing the home to achieve a post-free aesthetic without sacrificing strength.
The site itself added further complexity. Built into a sloping property, the foundation required meticulous planning and close collaboration between architect, builder, and engineering team. Before sending panels to the site, Yankee Barn’s team personally verified the foundation measurements to ensure seamless assembly.
Modern Barn Living, Redefined
Annandale captures a broader movement in contemporary home design: open interiors, understated rustic touches, and a strong connection to the outdoors. By blending Douglas fir timbers with hidden steel framing, the home embodies both warmth and strength, while panelized construction provided speed, accuracy, and weather protection during the build.
This approach allows for the sweeping spaces today’s homeowners desire, while ensuring the craftsmanship and durability Yankee Barn Homes is known for.
Being highlighted in Boston Design Guide underscores the significance of Annandale as a design achievement. The home represents a successful collaboration between architect, builder, and homeowner, resulting in a residence that is striking in form yet welcoming in spirit.
And while the home’s serene elegance may feel effortless, it’s the hidden layers of structure, steel, and expert collaboration that are the true backbone of its enduring brilliance. — Boston Design Guide
Profound yet approachable, Annandale demonstrates what is possible when vision, precision, and artistry come together. For Yankee Barn Homes, it is a project that embodies our philosophy: creating homes that are as enduring as they are beautiful.
