Multi generation living is on the rise in the U.S., with almost one in five Americans living in this type of household. At YBH, our barn home plans are current with today’s building trends. As a custom design company, Yankee Barn Homes creates floor plans to suit, including multi generation living arrangements. We incorporate designs that are flexible to accommodate individual family needs.
The Multi Gen Trend in Barn Home Plans
Two of today’s main drivers which account for multi-generation arrangements: The aging Baby Boomer generation and Boomerang kids. Baby Boomers are living longer and need more help as they age. Boomerang kids have graduated college and started a career but financially cannot make ends meet. A multi generation living arrangement creates benefits for both.
Enter Yankee Barn, offering creative and flexible barn home plans in any square footage a family requires. Here we use Eastman House, a smaller barn home plan, and Loon Crossing, a larger floor plan, as examples.
6 Design Principles for Multi-Gen Homes
Larger Common Areas. More square footage should be dedicated to common areas where the family will gather, such as the kitchen, dining and living rooms.
Private Zones. People will want private areas where they can retreat to have their own space.
Multiple Outdoor Areas. Create an outdoor area for gatherings, but also semi-private ones, too. For instance, an older generation living in the household can still find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the outdoors while younger grandkids play.
Ground-Floor Suites. This is important for two reasons: if there is an older generation in the home, they will appreciate not having to climb stairs, and it also affords the opportunity for additional income (think Airbnb).
Private Entrances. This allows people to come and go (family or rental guests) and not have to go through the main living space.
Lock-Off Opportunities. This secures the main home from the suite and is particularly important if renting the space is a consideration.
NOTE: As multi-gen living continues to rise in popularity, expect more creative barn home plans as YBH meets the needs of extended family units.
