The barn loft is a perfect space for kids. At Yankee Barn Homes, we’ve seen our clients utilize the loft space in a number of creative ways to incorporate a space meant solely for the kids, be they children or grandchildren. For those of us lucky enough to have been able to play in and about a barn as a child, the barn loft holds magical qualities. It’s a space to hide away from the world and allow your imagination to roam. Creative play is the rule. Some of my fondest childhood memories come from playing in my parent’s barn loft, and now, YBH homeowners have taken that concept and incorporated it into their homes with impressive results.
A Kids Loft Within a Loft
Moose Ridge Lodge, a vacation home, is a place where family and friends gather for fun down time. People of all ages are here for weekends and holidays. Even thought the square footage of this barn home is not vast, (1657 total) the young children need their own space as much as the adults. And, that’s just what their creative parents gave them, a pair of mini lofts for play and sleep. The first photo is of the “reading nook” in one of the mini lofts.
The loft space at Moose Ridge contains a common area, a three quarter bath and two bedrooms; each complete with it’s own mini-loft. The red bedroom has one side of the mini-loft. The two sides of the mini-loft are connected by a sliding barn “door” that creates privacy for the kids when desired. It also creates a fun space to climb through! The fern bedroom has the other side of the mini-loft space.
A Grandchildren Loft With Nautical Themes
Question: What’s better than a post and beam house on the ocean?

This home has plenty of space for a multi generation family. Included in the plan is a specific play area for the kids. The kids loft is visible in the upper right of this photo. It’s conveniently located just above the dining and kitchen areas. The loft provides the perfect space for the kids to be “a world away” while remaining close by.
