The Post and beam addition to Fieldview is amazing. Under the direction of Jeffrey Rosen, Creative Director at Yankee Barn Homes, this home went from an overlooked eyesore to a truly remarkable house.
About the Project
The original home was a run-of-the-mill 1980s postmodern in need of attention. The advantage was its location; a view overlooking farm land that is in reserve (i.e. a “forever” view). It was the perfect candidate for a post and beam addition.
The YBH design team created a 2-story post and beam addition which is now the new kitchen/dining room. The addition is timbered, easily allowing multiple windows and doors. Off the kitchen is a 1-story bay, intended as a sun-room or den. Although this was a post and beam addition to a preexisting home, Fieldview looks like it was built in one shot. While the addition was going up, the interior of the existing home was completely gutted. The original living room is now a first floor master suite with closets, a large bath and separate study. The original kitchen and dining area is now the new living room. An indoor/outdoor fireplace was added to the living room floor plan.
A bump out was added to the front of the home to allow space for a new staircase and hallway. On the second level, which originally was a master with bath and 2 additional bedrooms, is now 4 bedrooms, 3 baths an upper hall play/reading space and laundry room. The original unfinished lower level (basement) was excavated and enlarged to contain a 2nd laundry room, 2 bedrooms and bath, a media room, a gym and wine cellar.
BTW – Yankee Barn Homes designed the new garage pavilion which functions as a garage, but appears as a pool house from the pool side. It is topped with one of our beautiful cupolas. The design could easily be adapted as a functioning pool house and/or guest cottage.
