Building a Yankee Barn home on Martha’s Vineyard has a few extra challenges thrown in to the mix of concerns which are inherent in any build project. Height requirements are a major issue when building on the island. Also, if your build site is lucky enough to have a view of the ocean, there is a matter of placing the barn home correctly in order to take maximum advantage of the view, while not impeding the view of others. These things sound simple enough, but when added to the regular list of build requirements, and taking in the particular needs and wants of the home owners, the list of “must-haves” and “must dos” can seem rather daunting. All of these things, and a few more, came into play with this home, but as one views the finalized project, you would never know. The home is a wonderful example of a post and beam which does not have to be tall, yet has all the perks we’ve come to associate with owning a Yankee Barn home!
The Barn Home Exterior
This home is a series of smaller barn-like structures with a number of full and shed dormers off both sides of the roof lines. Due to the slope of the site, it also has several step-up, step-down connectors when moving from area to area and even though the height requirements were strict, Yankee barn Homes manages to configure an upper level for the bedrooms and baths.
The Barn Home Interior
The interior of the house has an open floor plan which makes the most of blurring the line between outdoors and indoors. Every room has walls of windows particularly intended to never allow an opportunity to see the ocean to go unobserved.
