A Barn Raising in Vermont: Up In Two Weeks

I watched this barn go up.

It was an amazing thing to see the process from start to finish, and I kid you not, this barn was built in fourteen days. The owner is a gentlemen farmer and needed housing for his sheep and he needed it NOW. So that’s what he got.

On day one the frame went up.

The frame and roof panels were pre-constructed at the post and beam company Yankee Barn Homes located in Grantham, NH then transported to the build site by truck.

Every piece and part is numbered and labeled to assist the builder during the process.

This is no small barn by the way. It measures 60′ X 40′ as the owner has a large number of sheep and he wished for them to live comfortably. Happy sheep are good sheep!

By the fifth day roof panels were being set into place.

The frame is made of beautiful Eastern White Pine timbers meant to withstand all kinds of nasty New England weather.

The posts and beams are made of very strong Eastern White Pine.

This barn has a rather unique feature: a gabled dormer off the north-eastern side. It allows for great light and a place for the owner to have an office.

I love the look of the frame as it goes up. There’s something so architecturally appealing about those posts and beams!

By day eight, the wall panels begin to go up.

Within days of completion, a gorgeous barn was beginning to take shape.

It won’t be long now before we see a cupola appear!

Two weeks flew by as I captured the raising of this barn. As it neared completion, I felt happy and sad as I knew my job was coming to an end.

I could live in this barn!!!

These were surely going to be some happy sheep. I envied them their bucolic pastoral setting and their beautiful New England Barn!
